Hi, my name is Alex Bartlow, I am an Accounting & Spanish double major, and I am currently studying abroad in Alicante, Spain. I chose to start this blog so that I am able to share and look back upon my many travels around Spain and the rest of Europe.
I love to travel, write, eat, and read. Of those four, however, writing seems to always find itself as my favorite hobby. I can write about food. I can write about traveling. I can write about reading. And yes…I can write about writing…which happens to be what I’m doing as we speak.
I know what you are thinking, “Why does an accounting major love to write? And if he does love writing, then why is he an accounting major?” Well, I have asked myself those same questions, and many more, hundreds of times. The simple response to those questions is, “I like both, and accounting seems to be the best career path to follow.” The complicated response, however, is that my mind is 50/50 when it comes to creativity and logical thinking. No, this is not a left/right brain crisis, it is a…well…”me” crisis. I can find happiness in finding a hidden tax credit, and I can also find happiness in writing a short story. But here’s the thing, I can always pick up a piece of paper and write for fun, but I can’t always pick up a piece of paper and write for money. Trust me, I’ve tried. And I admire those who persist.
Anyway, I have big plans for the future…some of which may happen, and some, well, might not. After I finish my 4 undergraduate years at Butler University, I plan on becoming a public accountant, and sometime after, probably sooner than later, I plan on attending a top 5 law school. Out of reach? Maybe. Am I going to try my hardest? You bet.
After that, who knows? Tax lawyer? Politician? Novelist? (We have come full circle)
These 4 months in Alicante will hopefully be a great way to expand my little knowledge of the world and myself, and hopefully I will make some friends along the way. So, sit back, relax, and I hope you enjoy my first blog page, “Filling in the Map”.
